Radio Cambridgeshire Presenters
Sport fanatic Tom Williams has landed his dream job as BBC Radio Cambridgeshire's Sports Editor. Listen in to Monday Sport from 6 - 7pm, Sportstalk on Fridays from 6 to 7pm and Saturday Sport from 2 to 6pm.
Q: What's the story, Tom?
A: I've been living in Cambridgeshire since the age of five and gave up a university golf scholarship in the USA to join the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Sport Team in 2002. (Wow, Tom - that's true devotion to the job!)
Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: Originally a professional footballer, then golfer, before having a fleeting desire to load cars on to a ferry before I finally decided being a sports presenter was the ideal job for me!
Q: What's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you?
A: I remember getting the giggles on the Breakfast Show with reporter Emma Maclean a couple of years ago. It was about something absolutely ridiculous which it often is at 6am in the morning, and the 7am news was almost impossible. It's been saved on our blooper tapes here at Radio Cambs, and it's often brought out to embarrass the pair of us at various parties.
Q: What's the worst job you've ever had?
I've been lucky. Working for the Sports Team at Radio Cambridgeshire was my first full-time job after leaving university at Southampton. I was a sports coach at various schools during my gap year which I loved, so I don't think I can really say what my worst job has been. I used to clean cars for money which I must say wasn't my favourite thing in the world.
Q: Do you have a catchphrase?
A: "Good afternoon, I'm Tom Williams, this is Saturday Sport" (every Saturday at 2pm between August and May!).
Q: What was the first record you ever bought?
A: Paul McCartney - Rupert and the Frog Song, 1985.
Q: What's your favourite food?
A: Sandwiches - any filler - can eat them anytime. Other than that, a nice fillet steak - medium, with a glass of red wine on a Saturday evening. Perfect!
Q: When Hollywood comes calling, who'll play you?
A: Leo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise? (Probably not quite cool enough for Bruce Willis!).
Q: In a fire, what would you rescue first?
A: Well, being a trained fire warden here at the radio station, I have thought about it. Probably my lunchbox - as it has all sorts of goodies in it!
Q: What do you do to relax?
A: Golf. I just wish I had more time to play now. I used to be off scratch when I was at university, but I'm now off one. It's a sport that needs attention and tends to bite back when you don't put the hours of practice in.
If I'm not playing golf, I like to watch just about any sport on TV. It drives my girlfriend to distraction because she likes to be "wined and dined" (at posh places!) and I keep telling her, an evening in with the snooker can be just as entertaining!
