| Apple Day | The Apple Festival is held on Saturday 15th October from 10.30am-3.30pm. It takes place at the Cathedral Centre and on Palace Green. Entry is free. |
The idea for an Apple Festival first came from Ely Farmers' Market regulars Dawn and David Fisher, and this year sees East Cambridgeshire District Council holding the fifth festival in celebration of our favourite fruit. The popular Apple Cafe, run by Sue Ryder, is the place for sitting and relaxing while you enjoy a variety of apple related refreshments. Further delights will be on offer at the Watergull Orchards marquee, including a range of ciders and apple juices, where you can whet your appetite before heading off for a Hog Roast, complete with apple sauce, of course! And if you fancy trying your hand at some apple inspired recipes at home, local chef Monica Askay will be dishing out tips and tasters.
Experts from a voluntary group in Norfolk will be on hand to identify any apples you may wish to bring along - perhaps you've had a tree in your garden for years without knowing what variety you're growing - we're told it helps with the identification process if you can bring a leaf or stem along with the actual fruit! Several activities and competitions will be running throughout the day, including the longest apple peeling competition, apple and spoon races, and an apple shy to name just a few. Folk dancing and live music all add to the fun of the day! |
