| The Facts | Through pioneering electronics, crystalline vocals, visual theatrics and dark-sex decadence, Goldfrapp have moved through the ambient shadows into the technicolour dream that is the hallmark of classic British pop music. Their third album follows their Mercury Prize nominated debut release ‘Felt Mountain’ in 2000 and 2003’s ‘Black Cherry’. Their main tour takes place in October 2005. |
Goldfrapp haven't been away for long. They have been recording their new album 'Supernature', but apart from a few festivals, they hadn't done any full length shows. | "...sulky, sexual and a bit ambiguous." | | Alison Goldfrapp on 'Ooh La La' |
That changed in Cambridge with their first live show at the start of their tour. Along with Cambridge, the first three shows are 'warm-up sets' to get them settled for bigger venues. The support were 'The Shortwave Set' who were amazing live and by the end, were an equal match for Goldfrapp. My sister didn't like them that much. She commented that they were like 'Sonny and Cher' - which was true. They were unlike most bands I have seen; playing records backwards for effect with a large gramophone horn and a toy mouth piano - they are worth investigating along with their album 'The Debt Collection'. Wearing the hat from the 'Ooh La La' video and the jumpsuit from the single's artwork, Alison opened the show with 'Utopia'. The other songs from 'Felt Mountain' that made the set were 'Lovely Head' and 'Human' from 'Black Cherry'. She then went on to sing 'Tip Toe', 'Train', 'Strict Machine' and then the encore was 'Black Cherry'. Some of the new songs from 'Supernature' were 'Lovely 2 C U', 'Ooh La La' and 'No.1' which is a strong contender for the next single as it's one of the most dancey songs that they have done, just without the strong beats that you might have been used to from Strict Machine. One song she started to sing with a vocoded microphone might have been 'Ride a White Horse' but as the microphone kept cutting out, she stopped it with “Oh...that's not gonna work” and moved onto 'Ooh La La'. It was a great night. The bigger shows will be more theatrical and should have some dancers too. The album 'Supernature' is out on the 22nd of August and the single 'Ooh La La' is in shops now. |
