This launch puts India alongside China and Japan as participants in an Asian space race

India's Giant Leap

The Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has hailed the launch of India's first moon mission, saying the scientists had done his nation proud.

The head of India's space agency (Madhavan Nair) described the launch of the unmanned craft (Chandrayaan One) as perfect and precise. He said it will take fifteen days to reach lunar orbit.

The craft will then circle the moon for two years and send a probe down onto its surface.
