Share prices surge in trading frenzy The value of shares on the New York stock exchange has shot up, with the Dow Jones index closing almost eleven percent higher, reversing days of successive falls. There were also sharp rises in Brazil, Mexico and Canada. Reports from Wall Street spoke of a buying frenzy in the final hour of trading. Investors were said to be scooping up undervalued shares. There was also optimism that American interest rates are about to fall. The rally in the United States follows earlier gains (on Tuesday) in Asia and Europe.
US ban on Burmese gems took effect
A new law which bans import of jade and rubies from Burma took effect this week in US in a bid to pressure the military to move towards releasing political prisoners. The new measures tightens an existing ban on the trade in gems from Burma. The earlier bank blocked import of gems sent directly from the country but the new law that went into force bans the import of any rubies or jade mined in Burma regardless of whether they may have been processed and imported via a third country. Following the ban, a leading international human rights watchdog has asked consumers to boycott gems from Burma.
