Studying MPH: useful tips by a Burmese Doctor

MPH
There is more demand of MPH degree holders in developing countries
For Burmese doctors who want to do MPH program abroad, studying at Mahidol University in Thailand is more affordable compared to similar universities in the US or UK, Dr. Ohnmar shares her experience.

Students have to take core subjects in the first semester, after that they can choose one specialised subject from a number of options.

The programme is also open for nurses and other non-medical persons.

Specialist trainings on subjects like statistics and computer skills are available for the students who want to strengthen their skills in the subject concerned, Dr. Ohanmar explained.

Prepare yourself well in advance

It is important to send your application before the school deadline, normally in December every year.

Application procedure and requirements are similar to most other universities; transcripts and evidence of work experience, and of course a TOEFL score of 500 or more is essential.

Tuition fees for students with a medical background will total around US$4,900, however, there will be an extra cost for those with non-medical background to take pre-requisite courses.

Prospects after MPH

Even if a specialist subject, for example like International Health, is currently not teaching there, the university is likely to consider to open a new session if at least five students apply for that subject.

Dr. Ohnmar

The biggest challenge, Dr. Ohnmar said, she faced throughout her endeavour was not studying itself but finding a job she wanted.

However, she reassures Dr. Ma Ei who queries from Rangoon, not to be worried because most students from Mahidol MPh programme get the jobs they are after.

Chances are better if one intends to work in a developing country because there usually is a high demand for MPh degree holders, Dr. Ohnmar suggested.

After completing MPH programme, there are also other opportunities to join schools in the United States that are affiliated with Mahidol, for example, Tulane University in New Orleans.
