Sitagu Sayadaw Dr.Nya nissara has been visiting villages about 7 miles away from Bogalay Township to distribute aid to the
cyclone victims.
There are 40 volunteer doctors along with Sayadaw. They are opening 6 clinics to take care of the victims around these areas.
The victims need shelter, clothing and food. Sayadaw says his team has been distributing various donations from the people from all over the country.
"About 80% of survivors from the cyclone are staying in the monasteries which have no roof", Sayadaw says. “The government’s response is not effective and efficient as they are taking the political point of view and lacking social point of view. I want to urge the government to act effectively in saving lives.” Sayadaw said in an interview with the BBC.
Sayadaw said the first priority is to reach the aid to the needy in the cyclone hit areas. The risks for being late to respond to this disaster will be huge. Infectious diseases like diarrhea and typhoid can be spread as there is no clean water, shelter and food. “I am concerned about whether the aid can reach these areas. Transportation such as vehicles and boats will be needed to reach the badly hit areas.” Sayadaw added. Sayadaw has suggested that the international aid should be accepted as soon as possible. “There is no international aid, not
even from our own government in where I am now. There are only private donations.” Sayadaw told the BBC. |
