Burma trip does not meet expectation

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said the latest visit of his special advisor, Ibrahim Gambari, to Burma has not been able
to achieve as much as he had hoped.
Mr Ban Ki-Moon said "There was some progress, but we were not able to achieve as much as we had hoped." Mr Ban Ki-Moon described that the visit has made some progress and mentioned that Mr Gambari was able to meet with many senior people, even including the constitution drafting and review committee members in Burma though he did not meet with Senior General Than Shwe.
UN special envoy met the opposition leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) , Daw Aung San Suu Kyi twice during his latest visit. Mr Gambari is now on his way to Senegal to meet with Ban Ki-Moon to brief about his visit to the military ruled country. . NLD sees no progress
U Nyan Win, the spoke person of NLD, said that he did not see any improvements in Mr Gambari's visit. U Nyan Win said "I don't see any improvements. The committee did not have authority to engage in any substantial political talks." He said that the authorities do not allow the top NLD leadership to meet freely. In the mean time, Burmese Embassies in London and New York, are listing Burmese who are staying abroad and holding Burmese passport for the constitutional referendum in May. |
