How can the practice of recruiting child soldiers be stopped?

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Recruiting child soldiers remains a serious problem in Burma with the military abducting children from vulnerable families.
Despite the promise by the Burmese government to eradicate the long-standing practice, reports from various parts of the country suggest that children are continued to be recruited as soldiers. Human Rights Watch documented that Burma has the largest number of child soldiers in the world. Why do you think the problem still persists? What can people of Burma do to stop the practice of recruiting children as combatants forcibly? It is open to all listeners to comment their views on the BBC platform. The programme took place on 03 September 2008.
The followings reflect the opinions received so far... Children are easier to brain wash and patronized in the wrong way easily. Instead of trying to change the concept of Dictators
in Burma, we should re-educate them how the modern society is thinking. Some people think the idea and policy will change
when General Than Shwe is out of the power. I do not think so. Nothing will change unless complete fresh new leaders with
precise knowledge and wisdom gain power. The longer they stay in power the more children will be seized and used as killers. This is more about the moral law. I believe it is impossible for the person like General Than Shwe to abide with this kind of law. He suppressed the holy-men to hold on to power. Since he is imposing laws to others without he himself abiding, I think the practice of child soldiers and child labour will still persist at this rate. Tainamkawng, USA It is quite natural that communist regimes (PRC, DPRK) had to beef up military to counter enemy within (public unrest) & without (western democracies). In Burma's case, main adversary is enemy within. Until & unless Burma transform into a democratic society with representative government, these recruitments will go on & on. First step of transformation process is obviously - National Reconciliation. Aung M. O., Singapore To stop recruiting child soldiers, we need to make sure there is no military dictatorship. General Than Shwe believes that he can rule forever. History is the judge here. All his wrongdoings are recorded and recruiting child soldier is wrong. However, their wrongdoings will remain in the history. It will teach us a lesson. When they are gone, we will live under the rule of law and recruiting child soldiers will be only in the books of history. Zam Mang, USA By recruiting children as combatants, Burmese government is creating an obedient army, which helps Burmese government control the rebellions in ethnic areas and the civilians as well. The dictators are aware of the situation which they need many soldiers to undermine armed forces in ethnic areas. Amongst the needed soldiers, children were involved obviously because children are more likely to obey orders if compared to adults and they have very less resistance to oppose commands. As children are lack of education, they are being moulded and trained as the military wants. This situation continue happening despite the promise given by the Burmese government. Because of this inhuman and cruel action carried out by this government, people in Burma are always paranoid about this situation and worried about their children and themselves and we are never free from fear.
