Should Daw Aung San Suu Kyi meet with Mr Gambari?

Burma
Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has met with Gambari last time in March this year
The UN special envoy to Burma Mr Ibrahim Gambari has failed to meet the NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi during his recent trip to Burma.

On Wednesday Mr Gambari was kept waiting for an hour at the government guest house where the scheduled meeting was supposed to take place.

He left the guest house when Daw Aung San Suu Kyi failed to appear according to the reports from Burma.

The UN envoy extended his five-day visit in an apparent effort to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Do you think Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has made the right decision not to see Mr Gambari? Or do you think she should meet the UN envoy? Why do you think she refused to attend the meeting with Mr Gambari?

It is open to all listeners to comment their views on the BBC platform.

The programme took place on 27 August 2008.

Aung San Su kyi has made the right decision not to see Mr Gambari. This is because Mr Gambari has no ability or no authority to change regime's attitude. Regime will always win any case until China and Russia agree to bring up to UN Security Council.
Aung Than Hla, Singapore

I once read about Thomas Jefferson and his leadership skills. He said "TRUE LEADERS REFUSE TO SACRIFICE THEIR CHARACTER AND SELF RESPECT IN THE NAME OF LOYALTY TO ANYONE". I stand with Daw Suu decision. The last time when she met with Gambari, she expresses her intention and Democracy for Burma. Did Gambari and UN move forward to do right things? The result was Burma is turning into ORLIGACHY political system by new constitution which is drafted by Army. There are three ways to change for Burma, one is Army way, two is open and free Democracy way, and three is UN way. The whole world knows where Daw Suu stand is. Since his last visits, Gambari already knew intentions of both sides. He is a failure. UN doesn't move forward, even an inch to improve oppression. What is the point to meet with Gambari? Agree to run Burma by ORLIGACHY system? Daw Suu is not corrupted as some UN representatives.
Tom Tun, Calgary, Canada

Absolutely the right decision! Daw Suu has given her message out to the world and Mr. Ban Ki-Moon that Gambari's persuasion on NLD & Daw Suu to participate in SPDC's forthcoming elections is a complete U-turn from the UN's earlier demands on "Dialogue participated by all political stake holders in Burma". The UN's failure to understand this indicates that it lacks in-depth knowledge in Burma's political situation. (1) The SHAM Constitution was not drawn by the elected MPs as promised by the regime chief. (2). Also, if the UN believes in the poll results of the May referendum, (flawed with systematic vote-rigging at every station) the UN should ask itself why did SPDC refuse to let independent observers present at the poll stations. It only needs common sense.
Khin Thitsar, Europe

What I feel now is that UN policy is to protect the government but not the people of our country.

Zayar, Singapore

Yes, she made the right decision not to meet him. I think she want to let him know, especially to UN and then more emphasize to point out to the world that his trip is meaningless, useless and waste the money of people who live in this world. He cannot make any important improvement for the people of Myanmar.
Khin Maung, Yangon, Myanmar

Gambari had been in Burma for more than enough times. The more he goes there the more Than Shwe is ignoring his missions. Unless Than Shwe is willing to come forth and talk to Gambari and Suu Kyi, it does not make sense for Suu Kyi to meet Gambari. She may lose her hope on his missions as we people also lose our hope. This is because we see no willingness in Than Shwe for a better change in Burma. We need to wait for his death first and the dawn will come and bring bright sun. Don't blame Suu Kyi for this but Than Shwe who turns his back on UN and the Burmese people.
Van Mualcin, USA

Politicians and generals cannot talk side by side naturally. General will never give up his concept till all his army men and he himself die. Suu kyi is home alone ready backup by sections. She cannot do too much in this condition. She should consider other concept to get winning policy. Firstly, she should try to get off from her home and make a long-term plan with new blood generations. Otherwise, we cannot get freedom for democracy for centuries.
Bagyi Aung, Singapore

It is right because he only met unauthorized person, as General Kyaw San, he should see Than Shwe or Maung Aye who are authorized people. I am so sure he has got no solution. He is just wasting his time. He should better stay home which will save money, time & energy.
Rose, Yangon, Burma

It is obviously that only regime is getting profit from UN intervention so far. Aung San Suu Kyi and NLD should refuse to meet any UN delegates until there is significant progress. Burma has resisted two decades of cruel military dictatorship with heavy causalities for true democracy, not for regime's disgraceful road map.
Precious Cat, New York, USA

As long as Daw Suu Kyi is under detention and our democratic activists are in jail, Gambari's visits are merely 'zoo visits'. It is as good as waving hands to captive animals that will never be set free. Suu Kyi should not allow herself to be like a poodle to be transferred in a car/cage to shake hands with Gambari. It is pathetic and humiliating.
Tha Han, Warwick, UK

Gambari knows exactly where Suu Kyi stands. She is committed for democracy in Burma. Gambari needs to persuade Than Shwe. So far, Than Shwe is committed to hold onto his own power. We, the people see no positive intention for democracy in Than Shwe's leadership. If Than Shwe is not willing to see Gambari, why should Suu Kyi trust on Gambari's missions? In stead of meeting Suu Kyi, he better tries to meet Than Shwe more. Suu Kyi has been so patient on this game needlessly.
Salai Liandang, USA

The UN envoy Mr. Gambari came to Burma three times or four times since September, 2007 and met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the leaders of SPDC. However, I do not see what the result of his visits is but many NLD members were arrested and the term of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi house arrest is still extended. By seeing this, the so-called government of Burma do not care the UN envoy Mr Gambari. They are going to do what they have planned, to hold general election in coming 2010. The UN shows the world that their activities concerning in Burma just only by sending UN envoy since 1990 and met both Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Leaders of NLD and Military leaders many times. However, I do not see the result until now. So, I think it is better this time not to meet the UN envoy Mr Gambari to show the world as a sign of his unsuccessful visits to Burma as an UN envoy.
Stephen Khie Lei, Sweden

Daw aung san su kyi made a right decision because Mr. Gambari met with many different associations which are under the control of military government except NLD. Otherwise, he shouldn't go and see the delta. This is not his business. The ministers hosted lunch one after another and he satisfied that. He met with different groups but which are just groups of government. I think Mr. Gambari is getting some precious presents from the government.
Ashin Sandimar Vithuta, Yangon, Burma

He cannot make any important improvement for the people of Myanmar.

Khin Maung, Yangon, Myanmar

Daw Aung San Su Kyi should not meet Mr. Ganbari. Actually he is wasting the time and money of UN. He met with her many times. However, we didn't see any good result. The situation is even getting worse and worse, i.e. more political prisoners in the Jail. He was also cheated by Regime. What I feel now is that UN policy is to protect the government but not the people of our country. If UN cannot handle this issue, many refugees and many people in Myanmar become lack of character based education in their right ages.
Zayar, Singapore

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is right because Mr. Gambari is very delay for his duty.
Mr. Phyo Star, Yangon, Myanmar

Only DASSK knows how she has been treated by the regime. I'm sure she made the right decision, considering the circumstances she is in. She is a very intelligent person, an international icon, Nobel peace prize winner. She is humble and down to earth person with full of compassion. We trust her judgement and the international community should do the same. The regime will do all it can to character assassinate her, but the world should have faith in her no matter what.
Jean Gale, San Francisco, USA

Daw Suu's move is totally right, I believe that she is really not satisfied with the UN efforts over Myanmar democracy affair. Moreover, I also think that her decision not to see Mr. Gambari signalled her well-strategically plans are going to proceed on with the time. But I'm now concerned about her health but I always hope she is in good health. Thanks!
