Have Your Say: Who will look after cyclone orphans?

children
Many children lost their parents during the disaster.
It is estimated that the cyclone Nargis has created hundreds of orphans in the affected areas in Burma.

Many of them are helplessly wandering around the camps without the carers looking after their welfare.

BBC has received reports that some of them are already suffering of traumas from the tragedy.

There are also concerns about human-trafficking and exploitation against the children.

Who should look after their daily needs such as food, shelter and education?

Who should be responsible for making sure that these orphans have a safe future?

The followings reflect the balance of opinions received so far...

To be frank, the international NGOs under the supervision of UN are the only reliable organizations, which are capable to help those in need effectively.
Ko Thet, Myanmar

Well obviously, the Burmese, if the children have close relatives or people they know who lived in the same town/villages as them it would help them. However we must also realize that Burmese orphanages are not orphanages like in developed nations where child care and welfare is given a high priority as needed, so I believe there must be some international oversight from agencies such as UNICEF, WHO which have skilled, trained people. In addition, with the rumours of the military force conscripting children, young people, we certainly have to watch out to prevent child abuse and force labour.

The International Red Cross should look after orphans of Burma.

The Burmese Government should take responsibility to look after its own people and its own children. They are the ones who will contribute to the country's economy in the future. It is very sad that while world media are very critical of the Burmese Government for not allowing aid into the country, it seems ironic, arrogant and very selfish that World Bank are now refusing any aid to the country because of the debt the country has. Burma needs help now and if it means writing off the country debt than World Bank should respond and facilitate the process rather than hinder it.
Emanuela Cecconi, U.K.

We know from years of experiences with this regime is that they will not do anything about the orphans. Not so all orphans will be taken care properly without government arrangement. Some will be lucky enough to be found by some NGOs or individuals and then will be taken care of them. Some will perish without anyone's knowledge. Burmese peoples' future is in the hand of Burmese. No one in the world really care to the end.
Jack, Singapore

I think these children are the biggest group being orphan around the world. By supervision under UN and international community, first, the government has huge responsibility, secondly NGOs or religious groups should take care of them, and third, private can open like PARAHITA School. However, the big problem is that in Burma the government will not take this responsibility.
Min Khaing, USA

Well-known NGOs like World Vision, Red Cross or UNICEF should record and maintain ultimate control and responsibility of orphans with no close relatives. Some children could be fostered in monasteries and some by foster parents - with monitoring. They should stay in Myanmar. In the immediate term, they should be cared for in large groups.
Myo Chit, Canada

The International Red Cross should look after orphans of Burma. The military regime might have taken them already as a chance to force them as child soldiers, or some child trafficking groups might have taken some of them!

The Burmese Government has full responsible for the Orphans children, by themselves or giving permission to do the other as possible as they can inside Burma and out of Burma.
Ma Nanda Myint, India

New democratic government, with help from NGOs. Not by current SPDC. Also by inviting any voluntary contribution all around the world. I believe most should be looked after by own government, but obviously, not current government. Therefore, to topple current government is our very first task. Whatever we have to do, we have to get rid of the 'devil'.
Ma Htaw, Australia

I think local or international adopters will be better than the State run orphanage.
Aung Bu Shwe, USA
