The New Broadcasting House Project is in two phases:

Phase one: the refurbishment of the original Broadcasting House. As this building is Grade II* listed, it is being carefully restored and adapted in close collaboration with English Heritage.

The works include a complete overhaul of all the technical studios, a redesign of all the workspaces to create modern open plan areas, the creation of four new storeys at the top of the building, the restoration of key heritage spaces, and a cleaning of the Portland stone façade.

Phase one also includes the construction of a brand new east wing behind All Souls church.

Phase one completed at the end of 2005. It was officially opened by The Queen in April 2006. This building will continue to be the home of national radio.

Phase two: the addition of a brand new extension, designed by Sir Richard MacCormac, after an initial phase of demolition of the current BBC extensions. Sympathetically in harmony with the listed buildings that surround it, this new building will be a spacious and modern broadcast centre with state-of-the-art technology.

It will house all the BBC news divisions (national and international) and contain the largest live newsroom in the world. Phase two will complete in 2012.
