The BBC has developed the Broadcasting House project via extensive dialogue with the local community. One of the major differences in the new Broadcasting House development is that it will offer unique public spaces where audiences and BBC staff can meet.
Situated at the heart of the new development, the “World” piazza is an open air space in front of the new glass entrance, for everyone to enjoy from April 2013. This unique public arena will provide a place to linger and see the BBC in action, a performance and exhibition space, and a café.
Inside, there is a public walkway, connecting, Langham Street to Portland Place, and a large, glass-fronted Media Café and viewing gallery overhanging the newsroom, providing a window onto the world of BBC journalism. This will be open to the general public from April 2013. It is also a place for our Radio Theatre audiences to relax before a show. There are interactive areas for the public to enjoy.
In the 1930s, an inspiring range of contemporary artists and designers were commissioned to work on the original Broadcasting House. To comply with its planning obligations to Westminster City Council, the BBC has continued this tradition and commissioned major new artworks for the new building.
