Conveying powerful notions of Scottish country heritage, there has been a widespread obsession with tartan since Queen Victoria gave it her royal seal of approval. Such was her love for the pattern she decked out her newly-acquired Balmoral residence in it as well as her children, thus sealing a long-standing royal association with Scotland and its emblematic fabric.

Tartan's appeal strays far beyond the conventions of royalty, however, and it has been adopted by everyone from Vivienne Westwood to Dolce and Gabbana on the catwalk. Luella is another key designer who has been adopting notions of antiquated Britishness and adding a rock chic twist. Famous patrons of Luella’s style include Kelly Osbourne, Roisin Murphy, Alexa Chung and Agyness Deyn. The new interpretations are felt from couture to high street, all re-working modern versions of a classic ideas.
