Scriptwriters

A major showcase of new writing in Bristol is taking place over the first week of July.

Creative writing group Southwest Scriptwriters is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a festival of new writing that cuts across all media.

Things have moved on a bit in scriptwriting...

The work - including three radio plays, a screenplay and a TV drama - will be produced as rehearsed readings on stage at the Alma Tavern in Clifton.

The writers involved are the winners of this year's Southwest Scriptwriters' annual drama competition.

This writing workshop is based out of the Bristol Old Vic, and says it "works to promote stage, screen and radio writing in the area using a mixture of talks, courses and reading workshops".

Chair Andrew Graham told this website: "We meet every week at the Old Vic and it is an open invite: the first session is free.

"There is a lot of confidence in the group and a lot of trust.

"People bring their scripts along for feedback sometimes two or three times."

The Bill

Current members have written episodes for TV series including BBC1's Doctors and ITV's The Bill.

The group's artistic director Tim Massey, said: "10 years on, we're still finding that there really is some exciting new work out there."

And it is work that could be picked up by producers sitting in on the rehearsed readings, says Mr Graham.

The first play in the season, Bottled Up, is by Totterdown resident Kate Stonham: "It's very encouraging to see my work placed again.

"Even the rehearsal process, seeing the actors' reactions to the script, helps the development process."

•The week-long festival of script-in-hand performances begins on Tuesday 6 July with Bottled Up by Kate Stonham.

On Wednesday 7 July: Abraham by Patrick Makin

On Thursday 8 July: A Pint On the House by John Colborn.

On Friday 9 July, If Possible, Make a U-Turn by Linda Ewles

On Saturday 10 July: Wingless Victor (the overall winner) by Bruce Fellows.

Each script will be performed at 7.30pm and 9.00pm: apart from Abraham, which receives a single reading at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £5 and can be reserved online or by calling 0117 909 5522.
