The £500m project to create a mini-town at the Portishead Quays takes a big leap forward today when the marina opens for the first time.

For the first time in 150 years, leisure craft will be allowed into the docks.

The second largest marina lock in Europe has been installed at the site and the first boats will be welcomed through the gates today.

The developers have spent nearly £4m on installing new lock gates that enable the port to open for yachts 24 hours a day.

Over the next five years, 3,000 new homes will be built along with shops and other facilities.
