Bristol residents are being encouraged to spruce their gardens
up ready for judging in this year's Southville's Front Garden
competition.
Last year organisers hailed the event as a huge success
with more than 200 people taking part. |

Ben Barker, chair of Southville Community Development Association,
says although this is only the second year the competition has
run, it has already become something of an local institution.
"There aren't many green spaces locally and generally front
gardens in Southville are pretty small.

"By making the most of their front gardens local people
can help brighten up the streets for everyone and also encourage
more wildlife such as birds and butterflies," he said.
Over the next two weeks, a team of local judges will be awarding
'Good Garden' certificates and shortlisting gardens which will
then go through to the final, where the five winning gardens
will be chosen.
In addition to individual garden awards, there will be a Best
Street award where judges will be looking for streets where
neighbours have worked together to improve their gardens.
There will also be a Best Pub category.
The prizes will be presented on 25 July. |
