Relive the riot in pictures
Site of the Mansion House

The Mansion House

The mayor and Sir Charles Wetherall go to the Mansion House for dinner, with the crowd protesting outside.
The mob attacks the house, discovering large quantities of alcohol - this helps fuel the riot! The building is then set on fire and destroyed.

The Back

The Back

'Bludgeon Men' make forays into the crowd, dragging people back into the Mansion House to be beaten up.
Enraged, the protestors go to The Back to pick up 'faggots' (large sticks) to aid their attack on the Mansion House.

Ordinary citizens' property burnt

Properties set alight

After burning most of the Corporation's buildings, the crowd burns ordinary citizens' property. Rioters become trapped in burning buildings under fallen walls, with the molten lead of melted roofs literally 'raining' down.

Mr Woulds

Mr Woulds

Unlucky Mr Woulds at No.56, a thespian actor. He was attacked twice by the mob - once in the square, and then again in his lodgings.

Mme Tussaud's
Mme Tussaud's

Madame Tussaud has her travelling exhibition of waxworks near the assembly rooms. With nearly two thirds of the square on fire, she is worried they will melt, so is naturally quite anxious to get them away!
Dragoon Charge

Dragoon Charge

Boats off this end of the square are in danger of catching fire. The Dragoons charge at full gallop, hacking into rioters and driving them into burning buildings. 130 people are killed and wounded in the charges, signalling the end of the riots.

King William III statue

Protestors placed ladders against the statue and covered it in the French Tricolour flag.

This exacerbated the authorities fears of a revolution.

Custom House

Custom House

The Custom House was set alight by some boys, who managed to escape the burning building.

They managed to steal, or save, a parrot!
