Big list to protect Bristol's buildings
104 Stokes Croft   Bristol's vulnerable buildings have been put on a list designed to protect them.

The Bristol 'Buildings at Risk Register' brings together information on all Grade I and II* buildings and structures in the city known to be 'at risk' through neglect and decay.
Stokes Croft carriage works is still on Bristol's at-risk list

The register should help council planners define and monitor the scale of the problem of neglected historic buildings and monuments in the city.

It contains details of 88 buildings or structures at risk - some 2.2% of the total 4229 listed buildings in the city.

Of the 88 entries, 68 are buildings and 20 are structures (monuments, walls, railings, tombs etc).

They include:

St Pauls Church, Portland Square (Grade I)
Arnos Vale Mortuary Chapel, Bath Road (Grade II*)
Clifton Observatory, Clifton Down (Grade II*)
Carriage Works, 104 Stokes Croft (Grade II*)

Since the last survey, 10 properties have been restored or reassessed as not at risk.

They include 51 Broad Street which has been restored into new flats and a hairdressing salon and 14 Portland Square which has been converted to flats and fully restored.

The risk grade for each entry in the register is based upon the English Heritage method of assessment.

The council stresses that inclusion in the register implies no criticism of the owners of the building or the monuments concerned, in fact many owners are actively seeking ways to bring about their restoration.

The BBC's Restoration series for 2004 is launched on 30 April 2004.
