The
journey was in aid of his website 'Mexperience' which is a
guide to all things Mexican, including travel to the Central
American country.
His adventures were written-up, photographed and published
on the Mexperience website.
We met Matthew ahead of his trek and now we catch up with
him back in Bristol.
It's often said that time flies when you're having fun, and
the last five months, although not always easy, have certainly
flown past.
Far
from being a holiday, the journey across Mexico was at times
excruciatingly tiring; one or two of the 12 legs turned out
to be very ambitious scheduling on my part, but you live and
learn.

needed discipline to stick to his travel timetable |
Although
I had built in spare time for things like rest and sickness,
I was still forced to re-schedule some of the journey after
I fell ill with the flu and was forced to rest completely
for a number of days.
Looking back, I guess that getting ill was almost inevitable;
exposed to any coughs and colds as I travelled constantly
in buses, taxis, trains and airplanes across the country.
During
the journey I visited 44 destinations over a four month travel
period; or about 11 places every month.
Far from being a holiday as some people had joked about previously,
I quickly realised that travelling over large distances while
needing to take pictures, meet people, see places and keep
notes - and moving on again to the next destination to do
it all again - required a disciplined routine.
By
the time the journey concluded, I had travelled over 18,000km,
taken over 4,000 photographs and typed over 120 pages of text
describing the stories and experiences of the journey.
Fans in Russia
The diaries and pictures were uploaded to the web as I travelled
from a laptop PC, connected to phone lines in sometimes remote
areas of Mexico.
It's
hard for me to visualise sometimes, the impact of what the
new communication technologies enable us to do.
During the journey, more than 200,000 people living across
every continent in the world accessed the website.
I was amazed to see that even people as far away as China
and Russia followed the journey.
With today's technology, even people without colossal resources
can communicate their stories and ideas on a global scale
using the Internet.
"What
was your favourite place?" is a question I am asked frequently
now.
It's a tricky one to answer, because in reality, there is
no one favourite place.
Like music, depending on my mood and circumstances, I would
enjoy certain types more than others; and so it is with all
the destinations I visited on my journey through Mexico.
The country's diversity is impossible to convey in just these
few words, but I hope my reports on Mexperience have given
people a flavour of what Mexico has to offer.
