It was a close one in the end for Speedwell volleyball club but they held on and managed to stay in the top flight.

Avoiding relegation seems to be a running theme in Bristol sport this year.

It was no different for Speedwell Men's Volleyball team either.

The crunch came on March 15 when they faced relegation rivals, the Poole-based outfit "Wessex".

International players

Speedwell beat Wessex by three sets to one but still had to rely on the results of the two remaining fixtures to go their way.

It was still mathematically possible for Wessex to move above Speedwell.

This didn't happen and the Bristol side remained safe despite losing their remaining two fixtures to league champions Malory and fifth placed Aquila.

Now currently ranked eighth in England with a number of players with international honours, Speedwell have a chance to build on the experience they've gained.

They've been boosted by the arrival late in the year by an ex-pro from Slovakia and will get a Polish ex-pro joining them for next season.

The team would like to thank everyone who has supported them this season and look forward to welcoming them again and any newcomers next season.

You can follow their progress next season at Kingswood leisure centre, Bristol from September 2003 onwards and check out the fixtures list on their website.
