To
help children learn more about the importance of washing hands
before eating, South Gloucestershire Council set a competition
on the theme.
Ten-year-old
Emma Pidsly from Hawkesbury Upton CE VC Primary School won
the competition and her school got a visit from the food and
health team.
During
the visit, the children tried out a UV hand-washing unit.
Food and health officers used it to showed how to wash hands
properly.
Glitter
bug
It works by rubbing a glitter bug lotion into your hands and
when you hold them under the UV lamp, they glow.
You
then have to wash your hands thoroughly to make sure you have
washed off all the lotion, then put them back under the lamp.
If
they have been washed properly, there will be no parts of
the hand that glow.

All
schools and pre-schools in the area were invited to take part
in the competition as part of National Food Safety Week in
June.
The food and health team also visited Little Rainbows at St
Chads Church in Patchway and Downend pre-school.
Children were awarded stickers, balloons and leaflets for
parents.
