Carol services and Christmas concerts
Candles   There are Christmas concerts to suit all pockets and musical tastes taking place in the city throughout December.

If you know of any more do let us know and we'll include them in our listings.

Tuesday 2nd December

Christmas Carol Concert at Clifton Cathedral

Brunelcare is hosting event for residents, tenants, staff and local people.  With music from the Bristol Grammar School Main Choir and Cantata Choir. Starts 3pm.

Thursday 4th December

University Advent Carol Service "Starstruck Journeys the Shepherds"

Takes place at St Ambrose's Church, Stretford Road, Whitehall, East Bristol. Admission £3.00. More information.


Friday 5th December

Advent Procession

Popular women's choir Miscellany sing an Advent procession with carols at St John's Church, Clevedon. Starts 7.30pm.

Tea dance

The annual Christmas tea dance at Kingswood civic centre.


Sunday 7th December

Carol service HorseWorld, Staunton Lane, Whitchurch

Starts 2pm. Free admission into HorseWorld after 12pm.

Traditional Boy Bishop Ceremony

St John's Church in Clevedon is one of only a few churches to observe this ancient custom when a choir boy is dressed as a bishop and preaches the sermon. This year the boy chosen is just 11 years old.
Starts 10.30am.


Celebrate Christmas, Bristol Cathedral, College Green

A classical Christmas celebration of music, reading and carols, featuring the New Bristol Sinfonia with guest, trumpet player Crispian Steele-Perkins. Message from Philip Jinadu on ‘The Hope of Christmas’. Starts 7.30pm, admission free, but advised to come early as 1,000 people expected.

Primary school carol service

A carol serivce for primary schools in South Gloucestershire takes place at Clifton College at 2pm.

Thursday 11 December

Lunchtime recital of festival music

At St Mary Redcliffe, 1.15pm by St Mary Redcliffe and Temple School.

Friday 12th December

Carols by Candlelight

Bristol Cathedral 7.30pm.

Saturday 13th December

Messiah - Special choir

Bristol Cathedral 7.30pm.

Christmas choir

The 60-strong City of Bristol Choir travels to Yatton Parish Church for a concert of traditional favourites and some less week-known songs.

The church will be candelit for the occasion and there will be festive refreshments.

Sunday 14th December


Kingswood and District Council Christmas Concert

Concert takes place from 3pm at Oldland Methodist Church.

Charity concert


Frenchay Parish Church holds its annual concert to raise money for the charity Headway. Begins 6pm.

Service at 7pm at St James Church, Romney Avenue, Lockleaze

Special Choir Christmas concerts

Bristol Cathedral 7.30pm - and 17th December.


Carols, candles and mine piece

Portishead Methodist Church at 7pm.

Community Carols

St Mary Redcliffe Church at 7.30pm.
  

Wednesday 17th December


Bristol Zoo family carol evenings

Enjoy a winter sing-along and a hot mince pie at the Zoo Gardens. Adults £4, children £2.50. Gates open at 6pm, zoo closes at 9pm. Also Thursday 18th and Friday 19th December.

Thursday 18th December

Exultate Singers

The Bristol chamber group return to the intimate setting of St James' Priory in Broadmead for a programme of Christmas music sung by candlelight.

Music will include traditional settings of well know carols, along with some rarely heard gems from the choral repertoire. The concert begins at 8pm.

Friday 19th December


Bristol Bach Choir


Bristol Bach Choir's Christmas concerts are known for their mix of season music from all over the world. Held at St George's off Park Street on Friday and Saturday 20th December.

Handel's Messiah

The Bristol Choral Society perform at the Colston Hall.

County Choir Concert

Bristol Cathedral at 7.30pm. 

Children's Crib Service


Clifton Cathedral at 3pm. Mass at 10.30 and Vigil Mass 6.30pm.

Sunday 21st December

Emerald Ensemble

Three evenings of Christmas gems at St George's, off Park Street, led by the Emerald Ensemble and guest soloists. Also Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd December.

La Nativite - Messiaen

Bristol Cathedral at 6pm.

Candlelit Carol Service

St Joseph's Catholic Church, West Hill, Portishead at 4pm. In aid of CAFOD.

Nine lessons and carols by candlelight

St Peter's Church, Portishead and St Nicholas Church, Portishead both at 6pm.

Junior Church carol service

Portishead Methodist Church 10.30am.

Carols by Candlelight

Summer Singers at the United Reformed Church, Portishead.
