Then
in 1997 there was another good reason to thank our lucky stars
for Caroline's ship, the Ross Revenge - or in this case, the
Thekla.
It
broadcast a temporary month-long station with one Stephen
Merchant as the breakfast show host.
The
Bristolian co-wrote BBC comedy classic The Office alongside
Ricky Gervais.
Which
could mean we'll have another Office on our hands in about
2010, because Caroline is back in the city this month.
The
broadcast marks the third time the station has broadcast in
this way to Bristol.
"Last
time we had Stephen and also Emma B who's gone on to work
at Radio 1," manager Steve Satan told the BBC.
"We
are hoping we can find someone who will be as famous again
this time!"
Steve
originally worked with the station as DJ and engineer when
it was still a North Sea pirate.
Caroline
has now gone legit, and alongside its satellite broadcasts
to Europe, also runs temporary stations around the country.
"Venue
readers voted us as the fifth best thing to happen in the
city the last time - we even edged out the Balloon Fiesta",
said Steve.
"Broadly
speaking we'll be playing 'credible' music, there will be
no manufactured pop music."
The
station says it will also focus on music from the city - including
playing music from Kosheen and Portishead, and some less well
known acts.
"Last
time we did an unsigned bands show. It was supposed to be
a community service programme, we didn't realise it would
also make good radio!"
Radio Caroline will broadcast live from a secret Harbourside
location from the end of February on 87.7 FM.
The
station is still on the hunt for a DJ for the breakfast show.
The managers will be holding auditions shortly. If you are
interested call Steve Satan on 0117 927 2954 and tell him
a little about the broadcasting experience you have had.
