Many Bristolians say what they love about St Pauls Carnival is how it brings different communities together.

This year, the BBC will be using the power of broadcasting to connect communities separated by a vast ocean but linked by culture and, of course, carnival.

The BBC World Service and BBC Bristol have forged a unique partnership especially for carnival.

Radio Bristol and the Caribbean Service will be broadcasting together for the first time ever on Friday 4th July, the day before carnival.

'Embracing carnival'

Radio Bristol's John Turner programme and the Caribbean Service's magazine programme will both be heard across the Caribbean and across the West country.

Debbie Ransome of the service said: "Carnival, like cricket, is one of the great uniting features of Caribbean life.

"The World Service looks forward, through its Caribbean Service, to extend that unity for Caribbean people on both sides of the Atlantic."

Radio Bristol managing editor Jenny Lacey said: "It's a lovely opportunity to show the people of the Caribbean just how much Bristol embraces carnival and to link two communities through live radio."

The programme will also be heard on the BBC Bristol and Caribbean Service websites, which have also linked up.

Users will be able to chat on the messageboard, find out the latest carnival news and try to win a radio by entering our competition.
