Tasty Totterdown

There's a tasty treat in store for Totterdown residents in September, as a new community cookbook is launched with a good old-fashioned street party.

Taste of Totterdown hits the streets of Bristol on Sunday, 14 September with a traditional party being held in ‘Totterdown Square’ in Oxford Street, where people can join in and celebrate the diversity of the community through some of the recipes featured in the book.

The project's, Mia Harris said: "The inspiration behind the launch event is a photo displayed in local greengrocers, The Banana Boat.

"It shows local residents on VE Day celebrating in nearby Hill Street, and the idea is to recreate the feel of the event with a long table laid out with food prepared by some of the contributors to the book for local people to taste and share."

The cookbook has been published as part of the Totterdown in Print project from the Totterdown Residents Environmental and Social Action, community interest company (TRESA cic), with the aid of Lottery funding.

Local residents were invited to share recipes which had special significance for them. The result is a diverse, and occasionally eccentric, collection of recipes from around the globe, ranging from Smažák,  a cheesy starter from the Czech Republic, to an Eritrean version of spaghetti bolognaise – there’s even a Bristolian cocktail, the Fat Tony!

Photographs taken for the book by local resident Natalie Corfield will also be on display at the party, and copies of the book will be available to purchase from the TRESA stall at the event.

Taste of Totterdown was inspired by the success of a previous community cookbook published in 2005 as part of the Front Room, Totterdown Art Trail.

The book will initially be available from Totterdown shops and the TRESA website – www.tresa.org.uk – from September 2008, before becoming available at city-wide outlets later in the year.
