The 13, from the University of Bath, pitted their skills against 70 other teams from around the globe at the world-famous track. The fourth-placed finish represents the best ever placing by a UK team in the competition. A modified motorcycle engine was used in the single-seater car which could accelerate from 0-60mph in just three seconds. The contest also looked at the team's business skills which included controlling costs, marketing and looking for sponsorship to fund the costs of the build. The engineering and manufacturing aspects of building the car were incorporated into the students' degree course. Help playing audio/video Dr Kevin Robinson, lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said: "For the students, getting involved in the competition is no easy option as it demands a huge commitment, but it motivates them like nothing else I have seen. "As a supervisor, it's extremely satisfying to see that commitment rewarded, as hesitant students mature into highly capable, confident engineers." Student Daniel Curtis said: "Our success was based on combining the academic and analytical side of our degree with hands-on attention to detail in the manufacture of the car." last updated: 23/07/2008 at 14:13 SEE ALSOYou are in: Bristol > People > Your stories > Strong showing from Bath race car students |
