Cabot Circus: Development timetable

The new Cabot Circus shopping centre is due to open in Autumn 2008. Chart the progress of the shopping centre with our guide to the development. Click the links to stories and picture galleries for more information.

September 2005

Work begins on the new Bristol city centre development. The site clearance begins and the hoardings go up.

October to December 2005

Demolition begins and highways work starts on Newfoundland Street.

January 2006

Spectrum building footbridge is dismantled and work begins on the foundations of the anchor store - which is eventually named as House of Fraser.

February 2006

The original name of the centre, Merchant's Quarter, is criticised by some groups who claim the name is offensive.

March 2006

Demolition nears completion and Newfoundland Street is reduced to two lanes.

April 2006

The name Merchant's Quarter is dropped.

May 2006

Traffic is switched over the new road system.

July 2006

Bond Street South realignment finished and new road scheme up and running.

September 2006

Roadworks continue and new central reservation is built.

November 2006

Work starts on steel frame for Cinema De Lux, work continues on concrete cores.

December 2006

Foundations complete.

January 2007

Harvey Nichols tower floor slab pours start.

February 2007

The new name for the centre is announced: Cabot Circus.
