Bell at St Stephen's Church, Bath

New bells for St Stephen's

St Stephen's tower, a landmark in Bath, is getting a brand new set of bells after the congregation helped by raising £500,000 to pay for it.

The bells were put up on Monday morning by a team of experts from Whites of Appleton, who have been hanging church bells since the 1820s.

Graham Clifton, from the company, said: "We've spent all morning pulling the six bells up with all the wheels and clappers and the bits and pieces that go with it."

Reverend Jonathan Lloyd, the church's rector, said: "The tower was falling down a few years ago. What the stonemasons have done is taken out the rusted iron to make the stonework safe and the bells are really the icing on the cake.

"It's a wonderful day. We're giving thanks to God for the tower, thanking all the donors from Bath and beyond and English Heritage have been very generous."
