Row sees festival co-ordinator ousted

The boss of a Bristol music festival has been ousted from his role following a row over the planned size of the event.

Martin Hiscox faced a vote of no confidence from other members of the festival committee.

They had been planning on an event to replace the Ashton Court Festival which went out of business in 2007.

Mr Hiscox has posted a statement on the festival website claiming "there were a number of clashing ideas within the committee".

"When I notified the committee that an event will probably not take place until 2009 after consultation with the council, a vote of no confidence was lodged and hence, a new festival was formed.

"Martin was pitching for a similar size to the Ashton Court Festival. But the group that came together was interested in taking it back to its roots."

Poppy Stephenson, committee member

"The loss of confidence from the committee in my ability to stage an event was due to my lack of experience and age, as well as the way I was managing the committee."

He told bbc.co.uk/bristol that "the people on the committee thought I was being over corporate and they also didn't like the fact the council wouldn't allow the event until 2009.

"I'm not sure how successful the new one will be but wish them all the best. I'm a bit disappointed they didn't believe in how I would run it."

Mr Hiscox wrote that the Bristol Music Festival was using Ashton Court as a "benchmark" for size but added that other committee members disagreed with this.

Poppy Stephenson, one of the committee members who wants a smaller festival, said: "Martin was pitching for a similar size to the Ashton Court Festival. But the group that came together was interested in taking it back to its roots - a community festival.

"We're not just aiming for an outdoor event, but we want other projects around the city in other venues, day and night. We thought the split was amiable. He was a leader."

She added the group would be now conducting a public consultation on the plans.
