Dragon Boat going under the Suspension Bridge

Dragon Boaters battle the elements

A group of daredevil Dragon Boaters had to change their plans for a charity row down the River Severn at the weekend because of bad weather.

The Bristol Empire Dragons had planned to paddle from Stourport near Birmingham and make their way down to the two Severn bridges and then into Bristol.

The team made it as far as Sharpness in Gloucestershire before calling off the bridge part of the row because of a force four wind.

The crew were worried that the wind was causing high waves which would have seen them sink in a treacherous waterway.

Instead, the boat was taken by road to Shirehampton while the crew walked between Oldbury-on-Severn and Severn Beach before rowing the last section to Bristol's Harbourside.

Participant Rob Britton said: "There were over two hundred people waiting at The Cottage Pub to greet the crew and the cheer that went was quite moving."
