The popular annual festival was in doubt after organisers revealed it was £100,000 in the red. By March, more than half of that money had been paid off through gigs and other fundraising activities. Over Easter, the festival focused on businesses in the city, asking for help from them - they have contributed £7,000 already. Now a group of volunteers has set up a We Love Ashton Court Festival website with the aim of making up the shortfall. The site, which was created using free tools such as Blogger, Flickr and Upcoming, will carry details of upcoming gigs and news stories. There is also the facility to donate to the fundraising effort. Ed Mitchell says the people of Bristol can become the festival's sponsor: "Really, 'We Love Ashton Court Festival' is everyone who loves our local festival, and doesn't want to see it go under in world where 'festivals' cost over £100 (and can't be reached on bicycle). "Festivals are expensive and a modest ticket price just won't cover it; we need to realise the value of our festival and help out ourselves. "We can be our festival's sponsors, and easy and free web technologies can help us connect to each other, share things, and achieve stuff." |
