Easton Cowboys

Latest update ...

May 12:

The final day of the Downs League season for The Cowboys has been building up for weeks; both teams were into their respective cup finals. The B’s were playing their bogey team Torpedo, without a win in five games against them we definitely went into the game as underdogs. The A’s were playing Portland, with an incredible end to their season finishing 5th after being near the bottom all year; the A’s were probably favourites

I was glad that the rain did not stop all week and when the wind picked up on Friday I couldn’t believe our luck; perfect Downs League weather.

An early kick off for us meant we had to be prepared, apparently for the first time this season no-one was hung-over, however we did have a few absentees and a few players barely fit. The manager had to change a few things in the team putting in a new centre back and a new left back, things had to change again when our left winger got injured ten minutes in.

The Cowboys fans came prepared for the bad weather with a Gazebo, which seemed to have more songs sang about it than the football, they also put on sandwiches and drinks for the rest of the fans . A couple of the supporters came in fancy dress as Mexicans; they even got a vote for Man of the Match in the pub afterwards.

The game was pretty even until the last ten minutes, because The Cowboys were pushing forward we left it a bit short in defence; we lost the game 2-0. I don’t think anybody will say that we deserved to win the game, Torpedo were the stronger throughout and took their chances well. Luckily the A’s faired better winning their game 3-1 with a great goal from Eddie who played that the first half of the season with the B’s and who is now a regular first team player.

The whole day was definitely the highlight of my football career, there was over 100 Cowboys’ fans there on what was not a very pleasant day. They sang for the 90 minutes of our game and the 90 minutes of the A team game, it was as close as any of us will get to having an atmosphere at a football match.

So this season, my first whole season with The Cowboys and I’ve never enjoyed my football more. The attitude and commitment of everybody associated with The Cowboys is second to none. Both teams have been improving year on year, if we can encourage some of the youngsters like Corin, Charlie and Josh and maybe even bring in one or two more, then I can seriously see The Cowboys challenging for at least one title next year. Of course we need to keep some of the key members of the team like Kev our ever improving right back, if he keeps going like this he’ll be professional before we know it.

Enjoy the summer everyone.
