Fine Tuned, an area dedicated to our local music scene including artist profiles, news and gossip and a handful of gig recommendations.

You can catch it at around 12.50pm on the Saturday Surgery with Dr Phil Hammond on BBC Radio Bristol.

31 March

Meet The Francos, a local band influenced by the Liverpool sound and keen to perfect the three-minute pop song.

Their first single, Mixed Up is available from their Myspace website or from Sugar Shack Records.

  • Congratulations to Dr Meaker, the drum'n'bass outfit who beat hundreds of bands to a coveted slot at the Glastonbury Festival's Dance Village.
  • The new band formed by Justin Greaves and fronted by Joe Volk, Crippled Black Phoenix are starting a tour this weekend to promote their debut album, A Love Of Shared Disasters, which is being released on the Invada label.
  • Scarlatti Tilt are playing tracks from their new album, The Gathering Of The Haunted at an in-store gig at Virgin Megastore in The Galleries at 1300 today.
  • Hacksaw's anthem, Go Bath City, Go has been adopted by the football club and will be played over the tannoy before their most crucial match this season.

  • The Bristol Inter Faith Group's putting on a big concert at The Colston Hall tomorrow, featuring world music, Latin, swing jazz and the metallers Return To The Field.
  • Eleven Eleven, Scarlatti Tilt and Bullit are playing the Louisiana on Wednesday - Eleven Eleven have a new download single out called Clear.
  • My Own Flag are playing The Croft next Friday to launch their new album, I Think I'm Made Out of Robots along with 3hostwomexicansandatinofspanners and The Glee Club Is Dead

Paul Nash, the main man behind North Sea Navigator talks to us about the inspiration for his songs which explore the darkest side of human nature with beautiful melodies and compelling rhythms.

North Sea Navigator's current album, Make The Blacklist is available via their website or Myspace page; and a label called Silber is releasing Edward, a duet with Rose Kemp.

  • Good luck to The John E Vistic Experience, Dr Meaker, Baraka and Venus Bodardus in the Emerging Talent contest for the Glastonbury festival - the prize is playing one of the festival's main stages.
  • Panic Number have signed a deal with Lockjaw Records with their first album, Low scheduled for release in the summer and an accompanying tour.
  • Thekla Social's announced an all-day benefit concert for the Ashton Court Festival on Saturday, May the 19th featuring Fortune Drive; Countryside; Ella, North Sea Navigator and The Counterfeits.
  • Bristol Uncovered starts on BBC Radio Bristol on Friday 30th March 0100 - 0300 focusing on local music and presented by Richard Pitt and Gary Smith.  The first show features a live session from The She Creatures.

  • The Pindrop Band are joined by John Hegley and Sheila Chandra at St George's tonight as part of the Festival of Birds

This week's news:

  • Monday, 12 March, sees the release of the first Jacanda EP.  Back To The Sky is a small collection of acoustic-guitar tinged pop from the band fronted by songwriter, Chris Pritchett.
  • Kizzy Morrell's urban music development scheme for local young people has branched out into South Gloucestershire.  Studio 7, which has already had success developing young artists like Nicole Jackson's running sessions in Kingswood every Friday.
  • The Cedar and The Wraiths have both been booked to play at the Glastonbury Festival - they'll be appearing on the cafe stage in the Field of Avalon.
  • Rose Kemp will to be one of the headliners at The Sunrise Festival, which takes place in South Somerset between the 31 May and 3 June.

  • Ashton Court Festival fundraiser at the Folk House in Bristol.  It features 3D, Katey Brooks and Becky Higg on Saturday, 10 March.
  • Ashton Court fundraiser: The Shrinks and Redd FM are playing on the good ship John Sebastian at Bathurst Basin. Friday, 16 March.
  • Fancy a bit of jazz?  Why not go and see Blessing and The Limbo at The Cube on 10 March.
  • The Weary Band, Rita Lynch and Millefiori at The Junction on Friday, 16 March.

3 March

This week a look into the loopy world of local pop maverick, SJ Esau.

His album, Wrong Faced Cat Feed Collapse is out on March 12 - go online to Anticon Records website or SJ Esau's Myspace site to get a taste of it.

SJ Esau's next local gig is at The Cube in Bristol on March 22.
