Students create Dr Who Brunel adventure

Students from Hartcliffe Engineering Community College produced a Doctor Who radio play which saw the time traveller meeting Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The three ten-minute parts of the play, called Iron Sea, were premiered in front of an invited audience on the ss Great Britain.

The plot centres on a meeting between the Doctor and Brunel on-board the ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Hartcliffe students got a helping hand in writing the story from ex-Byker Grove script editor Brian Thompson.

It was recorded in October with a small cast of actors including Howard Coggins as Brunel, Craig Edwards as the Doctor, Emma Harris as Eden and student Steve Worgan as Tom.

The music in the play was composed by year nine pupil Dave Portwood. Loban Tatlow recorded and was chief sound designer for the plays.

Ray Cockram, learning mentor at the Hartcliffe college said: “The final production, I feel, demonstrates just how much hard work was put into the project by the young writers.

“The advantage of this project was instead of just taking on facts about Brunel through a text book they had to get into the mind of Brunel and imagine him as a living, breathing character.”
