On show at Bristol's City Museum from 27 January - 15 April, Work, Rest and Play explores artists’ responses to changing patterns of work and leisure over the last 400 years.

It features paintings, sculptures and photographs by artists including Canaletto, Gainsborough, Gauguin, Manet, Ford Madox Brown, LS Lowry, Maggi Hambling and Renée Green. And a variety of free events connected with the exhibition are also planned, with lunchtime talks, family activities and Sunday fundays, as well as a programme of specialist talks for the hard of hearing and visually impaired people. Activities for adults From 30 January, lunchtime talks take place at the museum every Tuesday between 1.15-1.45pm, with staff from across the museum exploring various aspects of the exhibition. There will also be a diverse range of guest speakers throughout the run who will focus on different aspects of the show. For families On Sunday, 4 February explore the paintings in the exhibition with a special Sunday Funday taking place from 10am - 4pm with storytelling and practical activities. On Monday, 19 February you can join in a Family Workshop entitled Picture a Story from 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30 - 3.30pm. Visit Work, Rest and Play and choose a story to tell and learn how to create a storyboard.

On Wednesday, 21 and Thursday, 22 February have Family Fun with Paint at 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm with a painting workshop with Gloria Ojulare Sule. And there are two more family workshops, entitled Hidden Pictures taking place on Tuesday, 10 and Thursday, 12 April from 10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30-3.30pm. More activities On Saturday, 10 February from 10-11am, Saturday, 10 March from 10-11am and Thursday, 29 March from 1-2pm there are described tours for visually impaired people being held. A series of three linked described talks that explore the themes of Work, Rest and Play. On Saturday, 3 February from 10.30-11.30am, Saturday, 3 March from 10.30-11.30am and Wednesday, 4 April from 1-2pm, discover the paintings on show in the National Gallery exhibition with sign supported tours for deaf and hearing impaired people introduced by art historian Serena Cant. There are also British Sign Language tours for deaf and hearing impaired people on Saturday, 10 February, Saturday, 10 March and Saturday, 31 March from 10.30-11.30am.
There is also a hands-on workshop for visually impaired children and their families on Saturday, 3 March from 10.30am - 12.30pm and a workshop for visually impaired adults on Saturday, 31 March.
And throughout February there will be a display of work by inmates at Horfield Prison on the themes of Work, Rest and Play.
