Dead Christmas tree

Christmas tree recycling

Find out how you can recycle Christmas trees, paper and cards in the new year in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath. Remember, each council will collect certain items so check our list to be sure of what you can leave out.

Bristol City

If you receive a kerbside collection you can put your tree out to be picked up on your recycling day between 8 and 19 January.

If you need to drop it off you can take it to Bristol Zoo or the city's two main recycling centres at Avonmouth or St Phillips.

You can put wrapping paper in your recycling box as long as it's not metallic or plastic.

You can put Christmas cards in your black box. There are also collection points at larger Tesco stores and WH Smith shops.

South Gloucestershire

Cut up your tree and put it in your large green bins for collection.

Or trees can be recycled at any of the county's Sort It centres:

  • Collett Way, Great Western Business Park, Yate
  • Station Road, Little Stoke
  • Carsons Road, Mangotsfield
  • Thornbury Sort It Centre

South Glos will not accept Christmas cards in recycling boxes but encourages you to take them to Tesco or WH Smith.

It will also not accept any type of wrapping paper in recycling boxes.

North Somerset

Christmas trees need to be taken to a Civic Amenity Site for use as compost. There are no collections.

Your nearest site is:

  • Aisecombe Way, Weston-super-Mare
  • Coles Quarry, Backwell
  • Black Rock Quarry, Portishead

The council encourages you to take cards to Tesco or WH Smith for recycling.

Bath and North East Somerset

The council are collecting Christmas trees for free during the whole of January. Put them out when you would normally put out garden waste and they will be collected for composting.

Both cards and paper can also be left out with recycling.
