BBC Bristol Roots project co-ordinator Chris Burton has been running a scheme to help playwrights from ethnic minorities get their work broadcast on the BBC. In April, five plays were recorded by actors at the Old Vic.

The Stages of Sound 2 'Lifelines' project was designed to give under-represented writers a chance at writing broadcast material for the BBC.

Competition was strong - after having their applications scrutinised by a panel that included the artistic director of the Old Vic and an executive producer from BBC Radio 4, five writers were chosen.

Ros Martin, Roxana Freeman, Maitheryi Nandakumar, Jenny Davis, Shawn Sobers and Rob Mitchell (Shawn and Rob were a writing partnership) were put through three workshops with established radio producers and directors who helped them develop as writers for radio.

This project came to an exciting climax on Sunday 9 April, 2006 at the Old Vic Bristol, where the five plays were recorded live in front of a full house.

Actors including Mohammed George (Eastenders) and Gabriel Fleary (Casualty) were among the cast who took time out of their normal work to be involved.

The Roots project is supported by BBC Radio Bristol and the Arts Council England, South West.
