Alex Lewis

"Being on the radio has been one big uncharted journey. I never imagined that I'd get paid to do what I love best.. chat!"

Alex's background was an academic one. With a degree and a Masters under her belt teaching seemed the natural enough option, but after travelling Europe and living in Spain for a year, the classroom seemed too much like going back to school!

Alex Lewis

"I was back in Bristol after a year in Spain, already missing the sun on my back - and spotted an ad in my local paper. The BBC were looking to employ a community reporter for television.

“I had nothing to lose so I went along for the ride. I didn't get the telly job. But I got noticed for radio. The rest as they say..."

Alex started off her local radio career on Drivetime with Keith Warmington, and there could be no more appropriate induction! From trading travel news to trading insults, the hours between four and seven were never dull.

But when it came to cutting her teeth on her own it was The Sangam Show that provided her first chance to present on her own. The programme for Asian listeners on a Sunday evening was perfect.

"Sangam was and is a brilliant experience for me. I'm a second generation Asian Bristolian so the programme has meant that I've got to know my community really well, spreading out into the Bath and South Gloucestershire region too, I always know just what the Asian community are up to now!

“I also get to share my passion for my culture - from film and music to food and fashion. I'm always constantly surprised at the broad spectrum of people who listen to the programme - from Jagjit in Easton to the Bryan in Clutton. You never know whose going to call in about the Bollywood Quiz!"

It was then on to early mornings with the farmers between five and six, and not much beauty sleep at all! Alex since presented the afternoon show.

"I'm really proud of my roots and I couldn't think of a better place to be bought up than Bristol. I just can't believe I get to chat to local people, get to go out in my region on a day-to-day basis, and then call that my job. It's pretty fabulous."

You can hear Alex across Radio Bristol's daytime programmes and on Sangam on Sunday.
