Community station Radio Ramadan says the response from the public has been "phenominal".

Some four million people have been affected by the quake, which has claimed 23,000 lives, most in Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

Presenter Adeda Shafee told BBC Radio Bristol: "We've had people coming who have been collecting pockets of money off their streets and from their customers.

"Also, businesses have been coming in giving vouchers where they will be supplying free services if people buy the vouchers (for charity).

"That money, 100% of it, will be going to the earthquake appeal."

Abdul Haq, another presenter at the station, said the disaster was "shocking".

"It's come after New Orleans and the tsunami.  You sit back and you ask yourself why. Why has this been happening over the last 11 months."

Meanwhile, an Easton travel agent has said her phone has been "red hot" since the disaster.

Faiqa Azad told BBC Points West: "People have been ringing asking questions, asking about flights.

"Since the day it happened everyone wanted to get out there. It's really difficult to get flights out there.

"People are very desperate wanting to see their loved ones - some have had no communication with them."

  • You can hear Radio Ramadan on 87.7FM for the rest of October
