Over 200,000 people attended last year

Bristol's Harbour Festival 2005 is launched

An audience of journalists and early morning passers-by were treated to a preview of four of the acts appearing in this year's harbour festival.

Despite delays caused by a faulty sound system the preview got underway just before 9am on Wednesday morning.

The 30 minute performance showcased four of the acts due to perform at the Festival which is extended to three days this year thanks to extra money from the sponsors.

The festival kicks off on 22 July with entertainment in Queen Square and an evening concert at the amphitheatre.

The official opening ceremony takes place at 6.30pm when the waterfront will be filled with the largest flotilla of tall ships, sailing boats and yachts ever seen at the Festival.

'Biggest and best'

A replica of Nelson's schooner, HMS Pickle, is also expected to attend.

Organisers promise the Festival will be the biggest and best yet.

New entertainment this year includes an expanded World Dance stage, two energy zones in Queen Square plus displays from Bristol's seven twinned cities.

Last year over 200,000 people attended and this year the organisers are confident that figure will be beaten.

As well as the water activities there will be market stalls, children's entertainment, world dance performance, circus and street acts, sky-divers and live music.

A big firework display is also planned for Saturday night.

To help visitors relax a chillout zone will offer free massage and a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the crowds.

Bristol EDF Energy Harbour Festival runs from Friday 22 July to Sunday 24. Admission is free.
