The man they call Avon's forthcoming appearance at Bedminster's Tobacco Factory bar couldn't be more different - and proves laptops aren't just for computer nerds and businessmen. The super-chilled Factory bar is a great backdrop for Avon - real name Ken Peel - with his electronic, ambient and jazzy mix of sounds. The live set is made up of three keyboards, one small mixing desk, a laptop computer and Ken himself. Tracks from his debut album, Salary Man, and other studio projects are sampled and loaded onto the laptop so that they can be arranged and triggered live, alongside piano and synthesiser improvisations. Hailing from Bristol, Avon's name is a bit of an homage to the anti-hero of the cult 70s BBC sci-fi series Blake's 7. He apparently went down a storm at the Tobacco Factory bar in the summer and the venue is keen to have him back. The bar's music promoter, Harry Santer, explained: "Avon played here in August and the bar was completely packed. "It was a brilliant chilled out vibe, perfect for a Sunday night and we had such good feedback that we asked Ken back as soon as possible." You can catch up with the man and his laptop at Tobacco Factory bar in Raleigh Road on Sunday 24th October, starting at 8pm. |
