Scandal and schooling at the Old Vic

by Bryony Jones
Anyone who enjoyed Tom Stoppard's adaptation of Pirandello's Henry V at the Old Vic last season is in for a treat this month as a revival of the playwright's own Arcadia takes centre stage in the theatre's autumn season.

Arcadia is a comic drama spanning two centuries.

The action begins in 1809, the action takes place at Sidley Park, the country home of precociously bright teenager Tomasina Coverley.

The child prodigy is taught by Septimus Hodge, tutor, poet and friend of fellow guest Lord Byron.

Byron and Hodge are both lovers of the sexually voracious Mrs Chater - until her husband finds out.

Fast forward to 1989, and academic Bernard Nightingale arrives at the house intent on uncovering the scandalous events which unfolded that weekend 180 years ago - a tale which he believes will bring him fame and fortune.

Alongside the regular performances will be a number of special events, starting with an 'In Conversation...' session on Monday 20 September (6pm) when the creative team behind the production will answer questions from the audience.

On Saturday 9 October, at 2pm, there will be a sign language interpreted performance of the play for hearing-impaired theatre fans.

The following week, at 2pm on Saturday October 16, blind and visually-impaired audience members will be able to enjoy an audio described version.

Arcadia is at the Bristol Old Vic from 17 September to 16 October. Tickets, priced £5 to £20 are available from the box office on (0117) 987 7877.
