Teams M-R

Portland Old Boys
Portland Old Boys got together in 1956.

Portland Old Boys

by Anthony Pound
The club was formed in 1956 and joined the Bristol Downs League. The early days of the club were marked by its links with various families who provided a number of players for the team.

The club has reached Division Two of The Downs League on five occasions and has also played in Divisions Three and Four.

League honours have been Fourth Division runners up in 1958/59 and 1972/73, as well as Division Three champions in 1977/78 and 1998/99. The 1977/78 campaign saw the club record a record of 129 league goals scored with only one league defeat.

The season 2000/01 saw the club finally achieve promotion to Division One and after a tough first season in the top flight, a respectable sixth place was achieved in 2002/03.

Season 2002/03 also heralded a new chapter in the history of the club with the formation of a reserve side largely made up of the older players of the club stepping down to lower division football.

The first season proved to be a successful one with promotion to Division Three and an appearance in the All Saints cup final, where a narrow two one defeat was inflicted by Easton Cowboys.

Apart from the reserves' appearance in the 2002/03 All Saints Cup final, cup success has been scarce over the years.

1976/77 saw another losing All Saints Cup final and the only cup final came in 1997/98 with a two one victory over Newco.

The victory was a bitterweet one for the players who had endured the tragic loss of team mate Richard Keddle earlier in the year.

2003/04 saw another change in the club colours with both teams now turning out in blue chirts and shorts.

Phil Peace is the current first team manager and long serving Paul Haveron manages the reserves.

Club secretary is Jeremy Halpenny and the treasurer is Mark Hibbitt. Neil Pope is the social secretary, who following the successful tour to the south of France in 2003, is looking to build on this with a trip to Barcelona in 2004.
