West Kilbride Green Centre

Quarry makeover

This project will see the transformation of a barren, disused quarry into a thriving, buzzing Breathing Place. The West Kilbride Initiative is an environmental group in Ayrshire, who were awarded a Big Lottery grant in May 2007 to fund this wonderful project. Once the change is underway, the old quarry will be opened to the public as an inspiring example of how gardening and wildlife can go hand-in-hand.

The residents get busy

Scottish National Heritage, the Wildlife Trust and a local primary school will be working as partners with the Ayrshire group. As for the people who use the space, there are 6 500 local residents to enjoy it.

Plans for the design include a very large pond which should soon be discovered by the local wildlife, some landscaping to the area and improvement to access to make sure plenty of people can enjoy the space. There will also be a collection of different wildlife habitats to really keep nature happy, whatever shape it takes.
