Brighton & Hove

The Brighton & Hove Year of Action for Nature has now come to an end. Over the last year, BBC Breathing Places has worked with Brighton & Hove Council Countryside Service to help make the city a great place for wildlife as well as people. Together we've achieved lots of great things, such as:

  • Putting up 500 nestboxes across the city's parks and schools
  • Holding Tree Party events which resulted in 1,000 of trees being planted
  • Early morning Dawn Chorus walks for people to find out more about birds and their songs
  • Running the first ever Open Wildlife Garden Weekend across nine venues in the city
  • Supporting the city's schools and libraries in creating lots of great Breathing Places
  • Helping promote Brighton & Hove's voluntary nature groups and Friends of Groups
  • Recruiting lots of City Nature Wardens to record wildlife on the CityWildLife website.

There are many ways you can still get involved and Do One Thing to help wildlife in the city - no matter where you live. Check out our Do One Thing pages for some great ideas. If you have a bit more time on your hands then why not:

  • Volunteer with The Brighton Conservation Volunteers which meets every Tuesday at 9.30am by the recycling bins at the north end of The Level, Union Road (call Mike on 01273 736135 for info)
  • Become a City Nature Warden and record wildlife across the city
  • Join the Portslade Green Gym which meets most Thursdays at 10am at different venues (call John on 01273 415501 for more details)
  • Join your local 'Friends of' group - these are run by volunteers and help make the city's parks better for wildlife and people, call the Parks Development Team on 01273 292216 to find out about your nearest group.
  • Get your school involved with BBC Breathing Places Schools
