Carlisle's Breathing Places Campaign

Carlisle City Council serves a population of more than 100,000 in the north of Cumbria, adjoining the Scottish border to the north and Northumberland to the east. Carlisle is an important centre for business, shopping and tourism and is a city with 2000 years of history, founded by the Romans. It lies at the point where Hadrian’s Wall crossed the River Eden, a major route for trade.

The City Council manages 550ha of parks and green space, including woodlands, nature reserves and country parks. Local people are actively encouraged to get involved in conservation and management of green spaces through ‘friends’ groups and volunteer tasks.

Being involved with BBC Breathing Places Campaign is a great way of making our residents and visitors aware of the fantastic opportunities they have to enjoy nature and help to look after it. We know that the Year of Action will give many more people the chance to share in the enjoyment and caring for Carlisle’s rich natural heritage.
