Voices: Turning words into action

A great day out!

Students from Turnshaws School have been on a boat trip on one of West Yorkshire's canals. Laura Smith from Shelley High School's Cyber Cafe was there to report for our website.

Taking to the waterways...

The canal trip, arranged in connection with West Yorkshire Voices, was made possible with help from the Safe Anchor Trust.

The Safe Anchor Trust was established in 1995. Their primary aim is to provide free access to the canals for special needs groups. The trust is run entirely by volunteers and relies solely on voluntary contributions and donations.

I went along with pupils and staff from Turnshaws School for a brilliant day out away from the school environment. On the day, we used two of the Trust’s boats - the Lady Rhodes and the E. Austen Johnson.

The E. Austen Johnson is a broad-beamed narrow boat equipped with a lift for wheelchair users. Everyone got the chance to steer the boats and some of us even helped open and close the locks!

The scenery was beautiful and even the typical British weather held out (until lunchtime!).

After a delicious picnic lunch at Dewsbury, we set off back to where we started in the pouring rain. This, however, didn’t dampen our spirits and I was once again steering the narrow boat in a very zigzag fashion.

Everyone had a great day out and all that remains is to thank the Safe Anchor Trust for making the day so enjoyable.
