Steven began by photographing the customers at the Britannia Cafe in Bradford after being made redundant from his job as a graphic designer.

By his own admission, he says he had plenty of time on his hands inbetween signing-on and job hunting, and needed something to put his creative energies into. Steven explains: "As I'd always fancied doing a long term photographic project in the genre of the reportage style of photography, I went for it. Little did I know then that it was to take five years off and on and probably hundreds of hours."

Steven says it was almost like being on a wildlife hunt, poised for the best moment to 'pounce': "Waiting for interesting subjects and situations to materialise, I would lay in wait. Often amused and sometimes saddened by the things I saw and heard. I likened selecting subjects to the job of casting director for a movie!"
