Anglers Country Park, Wintersett near Wakefield
This lake was one one of Europe's largest open cast sites.

ANGLERS COUNTRY PARK

This walk provides easy access around a "lake" situated on what, only 20 years ago, was one of Europe's deepest opencast mines. The surrounding country park is now rich in wildlife and has been designated a site of special scientific interest!. PLUS PHOTOGALLERY.

As well as over-wintering wildfowl, particularly wigeon, and many other water birds there are ground nesting and woodland birds. There has been much recent success with tree sparrows and insect life is more than plentiful - butterflies, moths, damsel and dragon flies abound. Fauna include foxes, shrews, amphibians, stoats, weasels, voles, rabbits, hares and roe deer. More information is available in the Waterton Countryside Discovery Centre and the park is adjacent to where Charles Waterton (after whom the Centre was named) established the country, if not the world's, first nature reserve.
Getting there:
By bus:
Catch the 195/196 from Wakefield Bus Station to Wintersett village and follow the brown sign along the road and turn right along the short lane to the Centre, watching out for traffic. Check the timetable for further details: tel: 0113 245 7676 or click here for online.
Information: The buses on this route are not wheelchair friendly but people unable to use the service bus should contact West Yorkshire Metro for advice about using Access buses: tel: 0113 348 1900.
By car: Take the A638 from Wakefield and follow Shay Lane through Crofton to Wintersett and then follow the brown heritage signs to the Anglers Country Park. There is a free car park at the Countryside Centre. Secure bike racks are also availablr.
Walk conditions
The path is level and both wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Anyone who feels they are unable to walk around the reservoir can lend a booster scooter from the Waterton Countryside Discovery Centre.
